Twinhoods is a free map that translates any city into yours: pick the city you know and the one you’re curious about, and every neighbourhood of the second gets the name of its closest match in the first. Everything you need to write about it is on this page.

The story

Arriving in a new city, everyone asks a local the same question: “so which part is like…?” Twinhoods answers it for the whole map at once. Tell it you know Istanbul and want to see Berlin, and Charlottenburg becomes Bağdat Caddesi, Kreuzberg becomes Beyoğlu and the Nikolaiviertel becomes Sultanahmet. Each of its more than 7,000 neighbourhoods in 180 cities has a profile of 17 traits, from nightlife and history to how green or how gritty it is, and Twinhoods pairs them so every name from your city is used once, the way a translator would. Tap a place and it tells you why: what the two have in common, where they differ and how alike they are. It works in the browser, costs nothing and needs no account, and new cities join through Add my city, a race in which people pledge for the city they want added next.

About Twinhoods

Twinhoods (twinhoods.com) is a map that shows any city in the neighbourhood names of a city you already know. It launched with 180 cities and more than 7,000 neighbourhoods on six continents, is free to use with no ads, accounts or cookies, and grows through Add my city, a race in which the city in the lead joins the map at each departure. Twinhoods is made by Kerem Özcan at Space Island Ltd, a small studio registered in England and Wales.

Key facts

How it works

Add my city is a race to decide which city comes next. Anyone can put $5 to $250 towards a city that isn’t on the map yet, paid straight away in their own currency. At each departure the city in the lead joins the map; departures come more often as the race gets busier, and the next one is always on the board. $250 puts a city straight onto the map. If a city hasn’t won within 60 days, everyone who pledged for it gets a full refund, automatically. A pledge is a pre-order for adding the city, not a donation. Details in the FAQ.

Example matches

Real results from the app’s matching, each with its “% same vibe” score. Every card opens that match on the map.

Matches can change slightly as neighbourhood profiles are refined. Please check the live map before publishing.

The Twinhoods start screen: a dark globe of Europe and Asia dotted with pink city points under a starry sky, and a split-flap board reading I know Amsterdam, show me Istanbul, with 180 cities and 7,157 neighbourhoods.
The start: pick the city you know and one to explore.
A light map of Amsterdam with neighbourhoods coloured by character and labelled with Istanbul names, such as Arnavutköy over the Jordaan and Sultanahmet over the Dam, with a ranked list of all 37 places beside it.
Amsterdam, translated into Istanbul (light theme).
Berlin translated into London, with Neukölln selected: a ticket says Neukölln is the Peckham of London, 96% same vibe, with trait bars comparing the two.
A place’s ticket: Neukölln is the Peckham of London.
Twinhoods on a phone: London translated into Paris, with a sheet saying Peckham is the Belleville of Paris, 99% same vibe.

The mark is two map pins whose tips meet to form a heart; the name is written Twinhoods, one word. Use the files in the press kit as they are: don’t redraw, recolour or rotate them. Colours, type and the full rules are on the brand page.
